Microneedling With PRP: The All-Natural, Surgery-Free Way to Take Years Off Your Face
Some of the most prominent signs of aging appear on our faces. Since we present our faces to the world every day, they deserve to look as good as we feel. Creams and serums are important to keeping your skin hydrated and protected, but to really have an effect on the structure of your skin, you’ve got another option to consider.
Our aesthetic specialists at The Wellpath in Midtown Manhattan and West Park, New York, are led by Jamé Haskett, MD, a medical professional with the passion and experience to help you look and feel your best. Dr. Haskett knows how important it is to look your best, and offers microneedling with PRP, an anti-aging solution that works from the inside out.
What is PRP?
PRP, short for platelet-rich plasma, is a unique material used in medical settings for expedited healing and pain relief, and in aesthetic settings to treat a variety of cosmetic issues. Some aesthetic facilities might offer PRP treatments for hair growth, for example. At The Wellpath, Dr. Haskett offers microneedling with PRP to reduce the signs of sun damage and aging.
PRP is harvested from your own blood. We draw a small amount of your blood and place the vial of blood into a machine that spins, separating the blood’s components. Then we remove the platelets and a small amount of plasma and use this PRP solution to rejuvenate your skin.
Why microneedling?
Collagen and elastin are two structural proteins in your skin. Collagen helps your skin to maintain its structure and smoothness. Elastine helps your skin maintain its elasticity, which is the ability to snap back into place. The aging process costs all of us a little more of our ability to make our own collagen and elastin, but there are ways to get some of it back.
Microneedling is an invaluable tool in the fight against aging. Microneedling consists of using a device that contains many tiny needles. Dr. Haskett applies a numbing cream to your face before your procedure, so you won’t feel the pricks of the needles. These sterile needles gently and quickly run across the surface of the skin, creating tiny puncture wounds.
The wounds stimulate collagen and elastin production to repair the area, giving your new skin a refreshed glow. Using PRP along with microneedling helps you heal more quickly because of the growth factors and other healing proteins in the PRP.
Microneedling with PRP is a tool in your arsenal to fight the signs of aging, but the technique can also be used to treat other cosmetic skin conditions, including:
- Large pores
- Acne scars
- Skin discoloration
- Stretch marks
Dr. Haskett will determine how many sessions of microneedling with PRP you need and give you aftercare instructions. Generally, after your microneedling sessions, you want to make sure that you thoroughly moisturize your skin, use sunblock, and avoid direct sun exposure.
While you’ll start to see a difference in your skin right away, your full results take 6-8 weeks to show up.
