Slice them up, sprinkle with a little salt and a bit of olive oil and bake them. When buying your food, ask yourself if the food is unprocessed, whole, and with no added chemicals, pesticides and non-GMO. If you can answer yes, then eat it! Making this transition will take time. So why not start with opting to eat MORE unprocessed foods or choosing packaged foods with fewer ingredients while you give your taste buds time to adjust.

2. Buy organic.

It’s no secret that some organic food costs more. But isn’t your body worth it? Foods grown with fewer pesticides and fertilizers means less of these unnatural elements circulating in your body  –  and wreaking havoc! Also, organically grown foods, tend to have a higher nutritional content because of the health of the soil they are grown in. So while in the short term, it might seem to cost more, with more nutrients, you actually might eat less as your body becomes satisfied with less food  –  and that will mean less expenditure over time.

3. Think about nutritional value and variety.

How many different types of vegetables do you eat? Can you increase your intake of vegetables and fruits across the color spectrum? Meaning, do you eat lots of green, yellow, purple, orange, and red? When you make nutritional decisions, go for the most nutritional bang you can get. So, instead of eating corn chips, make your own veggie chips. Instead of eating 4 oz of conventionally raised steak, choose 2 oz of grass fed beef and 2 oz of lentils, which have much less cholesterol, fat and calories and a lot more fiber for the same total amount of protein (24 g).

4. Consider the effect.

If the food’s effect on your health is negative, choose a better option. You want to make as many food decisions that will positively affect your health, including satisfying your body’s natural need for nutrients and bringing your body into balance (or homeostasis).

5. Remember the four F’s.

You can immediately boost any meal’s nutrition level by adding fruit, fat, fiber and fuel. Fruit is full of antioxidants, glucose and fiber. Healthy fats promote optimal cell function. Essential fatty acids support hormonal balance and overall health. Fiber acts as a natural “scrub brush” for your intestines and slows down digestion so you can absorb more nutrients, and stimulate the growth of healthy gut bacteria. Fuel (or protein) helps your body build muscle and provides your body with the nine essential amino acids so it will functional optimally.

6. Eat less dairy and meat.

Eat a diet that includes less animal calories, and you’ll feed your body nutrition that’s been proven to decrease disease and promote weight loss. Studies about longevity and optimal health have shown that eating 10 percent or less of your daily calories from animal sources (that includes eggs, meat and dairy) is optimal for living longer with less disease. If you are a big meat eater, even taking a small step in that direction is good enough to start feeling the benefits.

7. Keep in mind the manufacturing process.

If a food takes multiple steps to manufacture, its nutrient factor is probably poor. For example, steamed veggies are full of fiber and nutrients. Veggie puffs from a bag hips, however, are baked or fried in oil, and have added artificial colors, saturated fat, sodium, preservatives and flavors, and are actually mostly potato starch, which is pretty devoid of nutrients.
